CFedS Panel Meeting Decisions

The first annual CFedS Certification Panel meeting was held in Phoenix May 4, 2007 to discuss a wide variety of issues relative to the CFedS program. Panel business is generally conducted via conference calls and e-mails, so it was nice to finally meet the other panel members we have been working with for nearly 2 years.

The main issues decided by the Panel were exam dates, calculators, tuition, and standards committee.

Exam Dates
Exam dates for 2008 and beyond were set:

  • February 1, 2008
  • June 6, 2008
  • October 3, 2008
Thereafter the exam will be offered on the first Friday of the months of February, June and October

The following calculators are approved for the CFedS exam; no other calculators will be allowed in the exam room.

  • Hewlett Packard – HP 33S
  • Casio – FX 115MS or FX 115MSPlus
  • Texas Instruments – TI 30X IIS
  • Texas Instruments – TI 36X SOLAR
Office of Special Trustee for American Indians provided funding for development of the initial training and program administration through FY 2006, BLM is providing funding for program administration through FY 2007, but the program must be self-supporting beginning in FY 2008. The original tuition of $800.00 was an estimate based on the average tuition charged by State colleges and universities for a 3 credit distance learning course. We now have a much better idea of what it costs to provide the training and administer the program.

The Panel approved a tuition increase based on projected costs and expected annual program and continuing education enrollment. Beginning September 10, 2007 the CFedS tuition will be $1,200.00.

Standards Committee
A four person committee was created to establish standards for supervision/responsible charge for CFedS surveys. The committee will report back by the end of June with recommended language for the CFedS Handbook. We will post the proposed language on the website and give you a chance to comment prior to finalizing the standards.
